ChisosMusic Critique: Light Up My World by PITA

I was browsing through my TL last week when I noticed a tweet endorsing this song. Since it was done by a gospel artiste that’s been buzzing favorably in the industry in recent times, I quickly went ahead to download it.

And wow, was I greatly impressed. This song “Sweet” gaaaaaaan.

PITA’s vocals are just simply one word; AMAZING. Strong, powerful and confident, Sure.

If there’s one thing this brother has again, its deep lyrics. Well thought of and well arranged. I took the liberty to browse through his Reverbnation page and I wasn’t disappointed at all.

However, if you listen to this song closely, you would notice what has become a trend with gospel artistes nowadays. The song ain’t a Christian themed Song.

By this I mean, it wasn’t entirely Jesus-centric. Not one mention of the name Jesus or God. It is a Love song but please don’t give me that “God is Love” excuse. Ain’t buying  it.

I believe that when you as a gospel artiste, it is expedient that you record songs even if on topics like, say… sports, there’s got to be a way of pointing out the fact that “Oluwa is involved”.

Like my previous article on Nosa’s Why You Love Me, I can sweetly place my boyfriend or girlfriend’s name that he or she “Lights Up my world”

“Don’t misunderstand me, I know I sound crazy but I know what I’m doing… Gbenga/Chinelo you light up my world “

I guess gospel acts now want to delve into other foray of topics other than what we now call “Church Music”.  Jeremiah Gyang, Tosin Martins, Gaise, Mali Music and Lacrae and much more are doing it, init?

Oh, wait! Maybe this is the new definition of “GO YE INTO THE WORLD”? Are we now going into SECULAR music to revolutionize it? Or is it a new rule that Gospel artistes can “touch” on the “secular” in their album projects?  Or is it just the fear that your audience would be limited to church folks or maybe in the later future PITA would say like most of em  have…“I AM NOT A GOSPEL ARTISTE”? That would be a shame considering a report that while PITA was ministering a lame person got healed. Isn’t that grand?

Please don’t get it twisted. I love and enjoy the song a lot but I’m trying to look at the bigger picture here.

Baa!!! What do I know?

Please rate the song below and express your thoughts on this issue.

    • Hey Sonia, thanks for checking in. You could also take the liberty to check up my other articles particularly the first one. My main purpose for reviewing gospel songs is strictly to put our guys on their toes. We don’t want any wishy-washy song in the gospel industry all in d name of accepted gospel song or commercialization. So, I chose to do this to fight mediocrity and the lack of excellence our gospel artistes began to adopt. I also emphasise that my write-up are purely my opinion, its God our father who gives the final. Thanks again.

      • wow……if you want to put your boyfriends name in that song thats your buisness. whats wrong with a love song dedicated to GOD. and whats even sinful or utterly bad in doing so for a loved one. bdw even a secular song or artiste can convey the deeepest messages so pls accept this the way it is.

  1. Okay, i had to comment on this. I love PITA and i love his music/ministration and i feel blessed anytime he ministers, and i have no doubt that he is annoited, yes! Everything this article has said is true but there is nothing wrong in a gospel artist singing love songs, even though that was not his purpose. christains are allowed to love and express such love through words/lyrics right? The lyrics of that song is very deep and im so sure you can connect to God with it, yes i do everytime i sing it. But i think PITA needs to be careful on his pursuit of ‘fame’. If your purpose is to do gospel and bless lives, by all means stick to it, i don’t really get the part where you are in a church ministring today and you”re in a bar singing the next day. I’m not a ctitic, matter of fact, i love your music. God is not mocked.

    • Thanks a lot for reading. Your comments are wonderful. Definitely, there’s absolutely nothing wrong in a gospel artiste singing love songs, but as you rightly pointed out, what is the motive behind it? Fame? Or Desire to teach true love? Thanks again.

  2. I have just one question, if you spend so much time looking for kinks in gospel music, where do you find the time to listen to the inspiration?

To the a fair critique, you have to be fair about it… Listen to the whole album first, then take your stance… If its still the same, then I accept your write-up

That being said, I have to compliment your writing and control of english.

    • Wow! Thanks a lot for checking in and the English compliment… *blushing* Thanks. Trust me .. I am a die-hard fan of PITA and his ministry. This is just me trying my very best to be objective.. I woke up singing this song and coincidentally, when I saw ur comment…I was listening to it..LOL. please go through my previous articles, then you would understand my point of view. I just want them to be better. Thant’s all. Bless…

  3. Wait a minute, does pita sing in clubs? Am askin bcos som1 actually mentiond dat wen he/she said ‘sing in chrch 2day and club 2mrw’. Cos if yes, den chisomusic is makin somuch point.
I seriously feel dat every gospel artist can write and sing a love song.. Its gud dat chisomusic cald out attentn 2dis in d claim of makin sure pita deosnt 4get his calin…buh d truf is, if we dnt write/sing love songs 4us, den who shld write our love songs? Is it terry G? Or mayb dbanj or even lady gaga? Shld we nw av a debate on dat again? Hmmm!’
U lightup ma world’ is a love song and cn b sung 2God and man; so pls lets leave it there. Just pray 4pita and remind him 2stay focus on God instead of tryin 2criticise d song or d person dat sang it.
    Tank u.

  4. PITA doesn’t sing in clubs….. There r christian clubs tho… And pls dnt judge by d venue of an event, I mean what it has been used for in previous times or what peeps mostly use it for… You need to know what event is taking place…… This BROS is a great man of God. Just keep praying 4 him

  5. To all those asking and saying Pita doesnt sing in club, i can cite an example of him performing in swe bar alongside other secular artist like Eva and co, well modern christianity will argue it doesnt matter afterall we can now conveniently invite MI to church. We all need God’s grace and mercy.

    • @ Babe. Pita used to sing in clubs for the pay, but not anymore. Let’s just keep praying for people like him ‘cos they are major targets of the enemy to stop the spread of the gosple.

  6. I was at coral blue and ember creek where I heard PITA sing and both times he turned it into a gospel event. I don’t know about swe bar but the two I saw he was crazy for God. He stated at freedom hall “my name is PITA and I’m a gospel artist”. Pls let’s focus on wack lyrisists and fakers and leave this christian soldier alone.
    Ride on PITA

  7. Lol. U guys actually need to chill though. Light up my world is an amazing song n yes, it can also be sung as a love song. Lool. I know for certain. But this guy is a blessing n his lyrics are amazing so we should keep praying for him that he doesn’t miss it! That’s all!

  8. ‘Light Up My World’ is a love song, there’s no other way around it. Anytime I listen to it, it reminds me that God is LOVE; a part of the lyrics says it’s ‘cos of You my life has a meaning, my soul has found healing, you’re the reason I’m singing…. Only you can make me feel this way you light up my world….
